On Friday 17 February 2017, Mike Kelly and Mick Veitch MLC met with locals from the commercial fishing and tech sector in Bermagui and Bega to discuss key issues facing these industries in Eden-Monaro. Representatives from the commercial fishing industry highlighted concerns over the commercial fishing reform package being introduced by the NSW Coalition Government. The commercial fishers also discussed with Dr Kelly and Mr Veitch the potential to create extra capacity in their export capabilities by gaining access to additional Crown land. Dr Kelly and Mr Veitch later met with local representatives from the tech sector to discuss the possibility of Bega becoming a Centre of Excellence for AgriTech. “Mick and I had a productive day in Bermagui and Bega engaging with members and stakeholders from some of our key industries in Eden-Monaro,” Dr Kelly said. “Face to face policy consultation with our community is essential in crafting the solutions that will work for them. We can’t carve out fishing and agricultural policy exclusively in Canberra and Sydney, away from our regions and without consulting affected communities.” Media Release
