The Cup is awarded each year to the best performed club in country NSW and is the CRL’s most coveted prize. The sharks were confirmed as the Cup winners in October 2016 after a stellar season in which they went through the Group 16 competition undefeated. As well as winning the minor premiership, the Sharks had previously won the pre-season nines tournament before capping off their perfect season by winning the Grand Final.
The Cup will be presented to the Sharks 2016 Coach Tim Weyman by an NRL ambassador at an informal function at the Adelaide Hotel, Moruya.
The occasion will be attended by CRL dignitaries including Mr Graham Andrews president of the greater southern region, Mr Kevin Felgate Southern Region Manager and Mr Alan Wilton president of Group 16. Also in attendance will be Clr Lyndsay Brown who has been a long time supporter of Group 16 rugby League.
The Cup dates back to 1937, donated by Reuben Clayton an early CRL administrator. The original cup will be on display on the night, however due to its poor condition the Moruya Club do not get to keep the trophy but rather they will be presented with a replica which they can keep as a lasting tribute to their undefeated season.
The evening will kick-off from at the Adelaide Hotel from 6pm with the normal raffles and Chase the Ace competition, prior to the formal presentation at around 8pm.
“We wanted to make it accessible to all of our supporters, and thought a simple presentation at the Addie would be a fitting way to get our hands on the Cup” club president Dave Farrell said. Farrell continued by stating that “we are extending an invitation to all of our supporters and anyone else that wants to come along, and share this historic occasion with us.”
