Community members finding it difficult to pay for the cost of desexing their dog or cat can receive significant discounts during National Desexing Month.
Eurobodalla Council is working with the local branches of the RSPCA and Animal Welfare League, who are offering discount vouchers for people to use for desexing at local veterinary clinics of their choice in July.
Thousands of animals are surrendered to councils, the RSPCA and the Animal Welfare League across Australia every year, often due to unplanned breeding that results in unwanted puppies and kittens.
Council’s Acting Director Planning and Sustainability Deb Lenson said this problem could be curbed through desexing.
“There are many health benefits for desexed pets. They generally live longer, have a lower risk of developing certain types of cancers and infections and are less likely to roam,” she said.
“They are less likely to display anti-social behaviour and are often calmer and more affectionate.
“It is also significantly cheaper to register a desexed animal – in Eurobodalla $55 per year compared to over $200.
“Remember, it’s also important to have your pets microchipped and registered as this all aids in the return of stray animals.”
