Tyrone Bridge Works Ready To Commence

Member for Bega Andrew Constance has today advised that work will begin this month to build a new bridge that will provide improved links for rural landholders, quarry operators and the Nerrigundah community.

Tyrone Bridge, located nine kilometres west of Bodalla on the Nerrigundah Mountain Road, will be replaced with a $2.5 million concrete bridge.

“The new, higher bridge will be less susceptible to flooding, be able to support heavier vehicles and require less maintenance long-term, Mr Constance said.

“Tyrone Bridge currently supports 250 vehicle movements per day and provides vital transport links to Eurobodalla’s dairy farms, quarries and forestry, as well as homes around Nerrigundah and Belowra.

“The new bridge also improves access for our community at Nerrigundah, making simple things like getting the kids to school easier and safer.”

Eurobodalla Shire Mayor, Cr Liz Innes said the project is another local example of three levels of government working together for an important community outcome.

“Council successfully sought grants from the NSW and Australian governments to fund the replacement bridge and we’re grateful for the support of our local members of parliament.

“The new bridge provides greater certainty to get quarry and dairy product to market, as well as opening up opportunities to use specially-designed trucks to carry more load, meaning businesses can get on with the job at lower costs.

The new bridge will be built adjacent to the existing one and will span 86 metres, crossing the Tuross River.

Like the existing bridge it will be single-lane, and the project will include new road approaches.

The worksite will be established during July and works are expected to continue until early 2018.

Traffic can continue to use the existing bridge throughout the construction process. The existing bridge will be demolished once the new one is complete.

The $2.5 million project is equally funded by the Australian government’s Bridges Renewal Program and the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Roads program from Restart NSW.
