Defending Gallipoli: The Turkish Story
A talk by Harvey Broadbent, Saturday 16 September 2017, 10-12 noon
Batemans Bay Community Centre, Museum Place, Batemans Bay
Harvey Broadbent is an Honorary Fellow in Modern History at Macquarie University and in 2016 was awarded Member of the Order of Australia for his ‘significant service to the literary arts as an author and publisher, to the television industry as a producer, and to tertiary education’. In this presentation Harvey will tell the story of how he came to find the Turkish account of Gallipoli in the Turkish military archives, how he transformed those documents into two acclaimed books about the conflict, and how the Ottoman 5th Army struggled but ultimately succeeded in defending the invasion of their homeland by the Anzacs and their Allies in 1915. A fluent speaker of Turkish, Harvey visits Turkey every year and lectures regularly about the Eastern Mediterranean and other regions in various educational institutions. He has also conducted more than twenty study tours to Turkey and Gallipoli and elsewhere in the Middle East.
This is sure to be a fascinating talk as it will give us a rare opportunity to consider the Gallipoli campaign from the defenders’ perspective. Those who wish to attend should register by emailing Ross Thomas at rossthomas083@gmail.com by 14 September, or by phone on 0402132698. The usual charge of $2 will be made to defray costs.
This is a U3A event. Non U3A members are also welcome.
