Twilight Recitals - 5:30 pm at St Paul’s, Narooma
Thu Sep 21 - Vincent Edwards - violin and William Hawkey - piano
Two outstanding musicians from widely different backgrounds criss-crossed “the ditch” of the Tasman Sea and ended up working together at the Canberra School of Music. Leaving his position as Principal Viola with the NZ Symphony Orchestra, Vincent Edwards became Head of Strings at the CSM while also performing with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra for many years as Concertmaster and Principal Viola. Bill Hawkey’s musical career began in New Zealand as a pianist, organist and choral conductor which led to a teaching position with the Canterbury University School of Music. In 1979, after a short stint in Adelaide he took up the position of Deputy Director of the Canberra School of Music where he and Vince forged a long professional partnership. After retiring as Professor and Director of Music at the Australian National University, Bill moved to Akolele, and was delighted to discover Vince had moved to Tathra. Both Vincent and Bill are still teaching and performing, and catching fish.
Thursday’s concert brings this pair together again to perform another wonderful program of music by Mozart, Franck, Paganini , Arvo Pärt , Kreisler and more. Admission is free but a retiring donation to cover costs will be appreciated. Enquiries to 4473 7541.
