Safer journeys are on the way for NSW South Coast drivers from Tomakin to Batemans Bay and Nowra to Coolangatta with the Australian Government approving $9 million to upgrade four main roads in the Eurobodalla and Shoalhaven shires
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael McCormack said better and safer roads were crucial to the South Coast, with thousands of visitors driving throughout the region during peak season.
“Today, the Government has delivered for families and visitors to the South Coast with the Eurobodalla Roads Upgrade Package set to improve road safety, commute times and traffic flow and help support the region’s tourism industry and local jobs,” Mr McCormack said.
“The roads to be upgraded as part of these works are George Bass Drive and Tomakin Road, the Princes Highway and Hector McWilliam Drive intersection, the Bolong Road Preservation project, and Beach Road between Perry Street and Vesper Street.”
Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis said the investment fulfilled a 2016 federal election commitment with the projects set to produce real safety benefits for local drivers and visitors to the region.
“The roads to be upgraded are the lifeblood of these communities and will help cater to increased traffic demand and improve safety and travel times,” Mrs Sudmalis said.
“At the Tuross Head entrance road, we will see a $1.4 million package of work carried out at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Hector McWilliam Drive to improve safety for all road users. Around $3.5 million will also be spent improving the intersection of George Bass Drive and Tomakin Road by building a roundabout and modifying the intersection of George Bass Drive and Ainslie Parade.
“A further $3 million will be invested in upgrading three intersections at Batemans Bay including Beach Road and the Princes Highway, Beach Road and Perry Street as well as Beach Road and Orient Street. The final $ 1 million is to be used on the Bolong road upgrade.”
Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes welcomed the funding and thanked Ms Sudmalis for her strong advocacy on behalf of the Eurobodalla community.
“It is fantastic the Australian Government continues to support local councils with funding for key transport infrastructure,” Councillor Innes said.
The works are fully funded by the Australian Government with work on all projects expected to start by the end the year.
