The Australian women's sevens side went down to a very solid New Zealand team in extra-time in the Commonwealth Games gold medal match Batemans Bay local Cassie Staples came on the field in the green and gold in the second half and narrowly missed a gold medal with Australia losing to New Zealand 17-12 in extra time. Australia came back from 12-0 down at halftime and managed to bring the scores to 12-12 with Aussie player Emma Sykes missing a game winning conversion with 58 seconds remaining on the clock.
A crowd numbing error followed the kick off when Australia stole possession back from New Zealand and, with time up on the clock, decided to kick the ball out instead of launching an attack with the very obvious steam they still had in their stride. In a thrilling extra stanza, New Zealand secured the victory when Kelly Brazier scored an 80m try leaving the Kiwis with gold and the Aussies with silver.
