Festival ‘grows’ busking hot spots

Everyone will be able to enjoy buskers during Narooma’s Busking Championships on Saturday 26 May at even more locations around Narooma than last year.

‘We’ve ended up with 35 busking hotspots all over Narooma - the Plaza, near Quarterdeck, near the Kinema, the middle of town, on the Flat and on NATA Oval,’ said Festival coordinator Sandra Doyle. ‘That’s six more than last year.’

Narooma Busking Festival, organised by Narooma Rotarians, will fill the town with music from performers from across NSW, the ACT and Victoria as well as many locals, and it is free and accessible for everyone to enjoy. It is part of the Australian National Busking Championships (ANBC).

The deadline for busker registrations is this Saturday.

‘This year we’re making more of NATA Oval as Narooma’s village green,’ she said. ‘Three local businesses have sponsored hot spots there - Narooma Electrical, Narooma Real Estate and the Top of Town Motel.

‘On NATA we’ll also have the Lions Club Barbecue and the Hello Huey Coffee Van plus a display of cars of all vintages. Members of the Southern Motoring Association will put on a display while a local car distributor will display the latest models, including a recently released campervan.’

Mrs Doyle said busker registrations are now really starting to flow in with the deadline for registrations this Saturday.

‘We’re expecting more than the 57 buskers we had last year, all of whom will compete for the $9,000 in prize money this year, thanks to our wonderful sponsors.

‘There are several different categories with a separate category for schools.’

Narooma Lions, Quota, CWA and VIEW Clubs will help Narooma Rotary on the day, as well as many other volunteers.

Mrs Doyle said they would still like more volunteers to help on the day.

The ANBC is now a national event with Narooma hosting one of the regional competitions. Winners from the regional events will be invited to compete in the National Grand Final in Cooma in November.
