Mike Kelly: The Liberals Are Failing The University Of Wollongong

In a media release today Federal Member Eden Monaro, Mike Kelly said "I am deeply disturbed by reports today that the Turnbull Government has ripped a massive $60 million from the University of Wollongong which will impact all South Coast campuses, demonstrating once again that they don’t care about jobs and opportunities in rural and regional NSW."

"As a result of these cuts, our young people may miss out on university or be forced to move away to study.

"The Turnbull Government clearly doesn’t understand how hard it can be for families from rural and regional Australia to fund the living away expenses for their children if they have to relocate to attend university.

"University of Wollongong, Moruya and Bega campuses also have a vital role in the community through their engagement with local high schools. The mentoring and outreach programs provide an introduction to university that bridges the gap for many students.

"Malcolm Turnbull says he can’t find the money to fund universities properly, but he can find $80 billion to give away to big business and the banks. His priorities are all wrong.

"In contrast, Labor has committed to reversing Mr Turnbull’s unfair university cap policy.

"Labor wants more people to stay in South East NSW studying for a bachelor degree, so they can get the jobs they want.

"Labor understands that nine out of ten jobs that will be created in the coming years will need a university or TAFE qualification."

I want South East NSW to have a strong economy, with secure, decently paid jobs. That’s why, unlike the Liberals, Labor will invest in education a top priority.
