NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) has eight Fisheries Officer positions vacant throughout the State.
“DPI Fisheries Officers help deliver on strategies to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing,” NSW DPI Director Fisheries Compliance, Patrick Tully, said.
“There are 100 Fisheries Officer roles throughout NSW, with vacancies now available in Coffs Harbour, Deniliquin, Dubbo, Huskisson, Maclean, Narooma and two in North Sydney.
“The work of fisheries officers involves optimising compliance with fisheries and marine protected areas laws, primarily checking catches of both recreational and commercial fishers to ensure they comply with bag limits, legal lengths and other important rules to ensure sustainability.
“These duties include field-based work such as patrolling offshore waters, estuaries and inland rivers, lakes and impoundments by boat, as well as patrols in 4-wheel drive vehicles in difficult and remote terrains.
“I would encourage anyone with an interest in fisheries and natural resource management and with a strong compliance ethic to apply for a position.”
Mr Tully said the NSW DPI is responsible for conserving, sharing and managing the fisheries resources of NSW.
The role includes regulatory functions including the issuing of cautions or penalty notices for minor fisheries offences and the preparation of offence reports for serious offences.
Officers are required to attend court from time to time to give evidence in relation to fisheries offences in which they were either the reporting officer or a witness.
“There are strict pre-employment requirements, including that applicants already have a licence to drive a boat and a manual motor vehicle in NSW. Colour vision is required for maritime certification and swimming ability (200m) is required as well as physical fitness which is tested for short-listed applicants prior to employment,” Mr Tully said.
