Narooma Rotary celebrates 60 years

Narooma Rotary Club celebrated its 60th anniversary on Saturday at Narooma Golf Club.

‘It was a great night shared with about 100 guests,’ said Narooma Rotary President Rod Walker.

‘It was wonderful to be joined by so many across the community including fellow Rotarians from Moruya and Batemans Bay, friends from Lions and Quota, and NSW Transport Minister and Member for Bega Andrew Constance, Eurobodalla Shire Mayor Cr Liz Innes and our Rotary District Governor Margaret Hassall.’

Mrs Hassall read out a congratulatory message from Rotary International President Barry Rassin.

Highlights included messages of congratulations from three past Rotary Presidents who were unable to attend – Jack Ings, Ian Thomlinson and Peter Bull – followed by a review of Narooma Rotary’s 60 years’ of service.

Both Cr Innes and Mr Constance were particularly impressed by the Club’s past construction projects including the building of Narooma Sport & Leisure Centre. Mr Constance suggested the Club might consider a new Narooma Bridge as a future project, quickly declined by President Rod.

Both Cr Innes and Mr Constance spoke of the severity of the drought gripping farms and communities across many parts of Australia, and initiatives by both NSW Government and Eurobodalla Shire Council.

Narooma President Rod Walker later announced that Narooma Rotary had donated an initial $1,000 to the 2018 Drought Relief Fund to support drought-affected farming families. The Fund launched last week is a partnership between Rotary Australia, the National Farmers Federation and Channel 9.

The Club also incorporated its changeover into the evening’s proceedings.
