Eurobodalla Council will soon begin major drainage works on George Bass Drive, north of Sunshine Bay Road.
Council will replace a large piped culvert underneath the road to ensure the safety of the community. The pipe has reached the end of its useful life and to avoid further damage to the road will be replaced with a new pipe.
The pipe is particularly deep, requiring excavation of the road to allow its replacement. To ensure the safety of the public and workers during the works, a partial road closure of George Bass Drive is being implemented.
Southbound traffic wishing to access Sunshine Bay, Denhams Beach, Surf Beach, Lilli Pilli, Malua Bay and other areas will be diverted south via Beach Road. Northbound traffic on George Bass Drive will be able to access Batemans Bay through the worksite with care.
The main excavation work is expected to begin on Monday 13 August. Works are expected to take about one month to complete, weather permitting.
Cyclists are urged to avoid the section of road during the works due to the lack of adequate road shoulder.
Council encourages motorists to take extra care, follow traffic control direction and speed limit signs and allow extra time when travelling through the area.
The project will be followed by two more road culvert works – extending the culvert on Beach Road at Wimbie Creek to allow for future road widening and a new shared pathway, and extending the culvert on George Bass Drive near Carramar Drive.
