Bruce and Denise Lidbury have retained the Mixed Pairs Championship after a hard fought victory in the final against Rita and Noel Downie. The Lidburys won their way into final after a convincing win in the semi finals against Lorraine Wake and Allan Etheredge. Wake and Etheredge had a day to forget and could not get into the match after starting slowly. The final was a much closer affair until a decisive period of play saw the Champions pull away. The Downie’s had the better of the early ends that were very tight. They had a 6 -2 lead after six ends before Bruce and Denise drew level at 9 all on the eleventh end. The tight tussle continued with the score 11 all after fourteen ends. The Lidburys then won four consecutive ends in period that determined the result. They picked up 11 unanswered shots in this period to make it very hard for the Downies. The Downies won the next two ends but the single shots did not close the gap enough to give them a chance. The final score of 22 – 13 did not reflect the closeness of the battle. It did, however, demonstrate the ability of Bruce and Denise to produce the important shots when it mattered most. Congratulations to move teams on an excellent display of championship bowls. Well Done to Bruce and Denise on retaining their title!!
