THE EUROBODALLA DILEMMA - PROPORTIONAL INTEREST? Proportional representation characterizes electoral systems in which divisions in an electorate are reflected proportionately in the elected body. If n% of the electorate support a particular political party, then roughly n% of seats will be won by that party. The Eurobodalla straddles the Gilmore and Eden-Monaro Federal electorates. There are 120,714 people registered on the electoral roll for Gilmore. The population of the Eurobodalla in the Gilmore electorate is approximately 31,000. There are 111,955 people registered on electoral roll for Eden-Monaro. The population of the Eurobodalla in the Eden-Monaro electorate is approximately 7,000. As a region should we expect more than a 5% proportion of interest from the representatives for Eden-Monaro and more than a 25% proportion of interest from the representatives for Gilmore? I hope so!
