The $1.4 million Federally-funded safety upgrade of the Princes Highway intersection with Hector McWilliam Drive near Tuross Head is now complete.
Deputy Prime Minister, Nationals’ Leader and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the intersection would now be able to better cope with busy tourist seasons.
“Right around Australia, the Liberal and Nationals’ Government is investing in the road network to get people home sooner and safer,” Mr McCormack said.
“I have heard from many locals – including during my most recent visit in December – how important upgrades to the Princes Highway are, and this is a step in the right direction.
“A dedicated left-turn lane from the Princes Highway onto Hector McWilliam Drive was adjusted, increasing separation from through-traffic. New signs, line marking and median were also installed.
Unable to attend the opening the Federal Member for Gilmore Ann Sudmalis told the Beagle "the works also included improved drainage, resealing, replacing the existing car-park off Hector McWilliam Drive and the relocation of the stop line at the intersection."
“The bus bay was also widened and extended to the south to allow buses to park further away from the intersection and improve sight distance,” Mrs Sudmalis said.
“The works were extensive but local drivers and visitors who flock to the South Coast for the holiday season will experience the benefits of a safer intersection and shorter travel times. Nationals’ candidate for Gilmore Katrina Hodgkinson said at the official opening the Princes Highway is a vital local corridor.
“Whether it is making sure people get to their destination sooner and safer or delivering a boost to local truckies through better productivity, the Princes Highway is a vital project in the Gilmore electorate,” Ms Hodgkinson said.
“We will keep working to ensure locals get the upgrades to the Highway we need and deserve.”
The Liberal and Nationals’ Government fully funded the $1.4 million project as part of the $9 million Eurobodalla Roads Upgrade Package.
