Eurobodalla Shire Council has secured $3.5 million for the construction of new water treatment and sewerage systems in Nelligen, under the Government’s $1 billion Safe and Secure Water Program.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said everyone in NSW deserves access to reliable water services and the Government is getting on with the job of delivering critical water and wastewater infrastructure in our regions.
“We know that NSW communities depend on access to clean, reliable and affordable water and wastewater infrastructure that meets environmental and health standards,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“With more than 1.9 million people living in more than 500 regional NSW communities, it is vital we continue to invest in essential local infrastructure.
“The Government is committed to ensuring every regional community has access to a safe and reliable water supply and critical water infrastructure.”
Member for Bega Andrew Constance said Nelligen does not yet have access to a drinking water supply or wastewater collection, with the community currently relying on rainwater tanks.
“This funding will be used for the construction of an essential water supply scheme and sewage scheme, having an enormous impact on water security for the community, as well as improved environmental outcomes,” Mr Constance said.
“This infrastructure investment is great news for the Nelligen community and will soon be giving residents peace of mind every time they turn on the tap.
“We are committed not only to improving water security for our regions, but also to driving real economic growth, public health and socioeconomic outcomes through vital infrastructure investment and planning.”
Eurobodalla Shire Mayor Liz Innes welcomed the announcement, saying the funding will go a long way, with the delivery of the project expected to cost close to $14 million.
“The project is a major boost for water and wastewater infrastructure in the region and it is great to work in partnership with the NSW Government to secure the future needs of our rural communities are met.
“This announcement will also provide an immense benefit to our waterways, ensuring they are kept healthy and vibrant and in turn support our local aquaculture industry on the Clyde River,” Clr Innes said.
Following an assessment process, the Eurobodalla Shire Council secured the funding under the Safe and Secure Water Program in February this year.
The Program co-funds eligible water and sewerage projects that deliver economic growth in regional NSW through improvements to public health, water security, environmental outcomes and social benefits.
