Shire-wide news extracts from the Moruya Examiner of 15 March 1919, provided by the Moruya & District Historical Society:
MOTOR ACCIDENT. – Owing to the steering gear going wrong, the mail car from Bodalla, driven by Mr. R Mehl, bumped into a culvert and got somewhat damaged, the front axle being strained.
CAR BURNT. – On Monday night when coming down Baldwin’s Hill Mr. B Moran’s Star Car broke into flames and was destroyed, the driver, Mr. R. Mehl, escaping with severe burns on his arms and legs
JAMBED AND INJURED. – On Saturday last Mr. F Anderson, of Lake View, Bergalia, met with a mishap from which he was fortunate to escape with his life. It appears that he had sent his man with a pair of horses to draw in a loading from a paddock situated about a mile from his residence. Later on, accompanied by his two little sons on their ponies, he rode out in the same direction in which his man had gone, when he found his team stuck in some bad ground. Mr. Anderson at once dismounted and taking the nearside horse by the head endeavoured to slue the pair to the left, when the offside animal plunged round jamming Mr. Anderson against a tree which in his hurry he had not noticed before, with the result that he had his collar bone and several ribs broken. Dr. Quilter was at once phoned for, but being absent at the Bay, Mr. Shepherd very thoughtfully took the nurse out in his private car.
THROWN FROM A CART. – Strange to relate that on Saturday last, the day that Mr. Fred Anderson had his collar bone and several ribs broken at Bergalia, Mr. John Robb was thrown from his cart at Mulwhy and sustained exactly a similar smash, his collar bone being dislocated and several ribs broken. Mr. Robb was driven to Nelligen by Mr. McCauley and Dr. Quilter being at Bateman’s Bay at the time, was soon in attendance on the injured man.
DEATH. – Just before going to press we were informed that the death of Mrs. E. J. Coman, formerly of Eurobodalla, had taken place at Albion Park. Deceased was about 70 years of age, was a sister of Mrs. Roger Heffernan of Yarragee and Mr. W. “Kenny” Flanagan of Sydney.

Sir,- If you would permit me I would like to make a few remarks in reference to the correspondence in your columns as to what took place during the recent disastrous bush fires, when two of our local hotelkeepers supplied the fire-fighters with liquid refreshments free of charge.
To me it seems that neither of your correspondents deserve to be complimented on their letters. Mr. Hyde makes certain statements which if true cast a slur on the district: I cannot admit that he has proved his case. Even admitting that one or two may have taken drink to excess, I consider that it would have been more charitable and Christian like to have camouflaged that part of the proceedings, as after his statements everyone who collapsed would have been more or less under suspicion, which to say the least, is very hard on those who so disinterestedly worked to the utmost limit of their strength in combating the fires.

BATEMAN’S BAY. – (From our Correspondent).
Yet another Saw Mill has appeared. The “Bermagui” brought on Saturday a large portable engine, which is to go along to Benandarah, where the new mill is to be erected.
Two new houses have been built:- one for Mr. George Patrech and one for Mr. David Ison of Mogo. These are on the South approach of the town.
Twenty 100 years ago booklets containing articles for the years 1899 to 1918 are available ($5 ea) from the Society’s rooms. Copies of local newspapers from the 1860s to date can be viewed at the Society’s Family History Research Centre (Ph 4474 3224) situated at the rear of the Museum in Campbell St. Moruya (www.mdhs.org.au).
