Buskers line up for $10,000 in prizes

Buskers wanting to compete for $10,000 in prize money at Narooma’s Regional Busking Championships on Saturday 25 May must register online by 11 May.

Narooma Busking festival is organised by Narooma Rotary and is part of the Australian National Busking Championships (ANBC) and the River of Art Festival.

“Buskers from Katoomba to Mallacoota have said they intend taking part, but we urge them to please register soon to assist with our organisation,” said Rotary spokesperson Lynda Ord.

“It’s such great fun for everyone, buskers and spectators alike, and we have 30 different prizes up for grabs, thanks to our very generous local sponsors.”

Young Narooma guitarist Jakob Poyner was the very first to register and it will be his third Narooma Busking gig.

“I really enjoy it, getting feedback from people and getting known more,” Jakob said. “It helps me get ahead with my playing. It’s also great networking especially for future gigs.”

Jakob started playing when he was eight and in the six years since then has acquired seven guitars; choosing a different one depending on the song and venue.

He will join a host of talented performers from across NSW, the ACT and north eastern Victoria filling Narooma with music which is free and accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Narooma Busking coordinator John Rungen said last year’s Festival was a huge success with 55 buskers performing at the many busking hot spots around town.

Major sponsors Narooma Golf Club will sponsor the $1,000 People’s Choice first prize and host the finals, Club Narooma will sponsor the $1,000 Open Champion, and Big Four Narooma Easts Holiday Park will sponsor $500 for the Best School Group and provide administration assistance.

The ANBC is now a national event with Narooma hosting one of the regional competitions. Winners from the regional events will be invited to compete in the National Grand Final in Cooma in November.
