Today marks Dr Michael Holland’s final day as a contracted Obstetrician with the Southern NSW Local Health District.
Dr Holland has worked as an Obstetrician with the Southern NSW LHD for 19 years. Recently he was driven to run as a candidate for Labor in the up-coming by-election after raising serious concerns with the NSW Liberal Government about the unsafe practices across the Bega and Eurobodalla Shires.
While Dr Holland would be on call for up to 120 hours a week the pandemic has shone a further light on the enormous pressure the health care system is under, however this has been an issue that the Bega electorate has been facing for decades.
Raising the issue of staffing and service shortages with the NSW Government and NSW Health on multiple occasions, Dr Michael Holland was ignored.
Michael said of his final day "I want to acknowledge my colleagues, the health care workers, nurses and doctors who work tirelessly for our community. Their dedication to their work is a testament to their character.
"I have been disheartened by the lack of services across our region, and along with that the lack of staffing in our hospitals. I have raised these issues on multiple occasions with the NSW Government – however nothing has been done.
‘I thought, if I can't fix the problem as a doctor, I had to do it politically. We need a representative who listens to and stands up for our community."
