It became more than apparent during the bushfires and then during the Covid peak that timely, accurate reporting was critical in keeping the community informed of essential information.
ABC South East, as the designated emergency radio station did an amazing job, as did local radio 2EC. When the internet went down the community turned to their radios for essential local updates.
Whilst the internet was able to play its role in timely dissemination of timely bushfire information The Beagle along with the Braidwood Bugle joined others in providing over seventy days straight of continued steamed local updates via social media. The fragility of the internet was felt across the region when we lost power and communications.
During the bushfires ABC’s Mt Wandera transmission site at Bateman's Bay was disabled however 2EC and Power FM had no issues with transmission coverage and remained on full power with their diesel generators (that have 4-5 days capacity) being refuelled continuously.
The company’s Bateman’s Bay studios were evacuated twice, but Power FM and 2EC were able to broadcast from the Bega studios to cover the Far South Coast.
Of importance is to note that it is advertisers that provide Power FM and 2EC to the community. Unlike the ABC our two local commercial radio stations rely on advertisers to keep them afloat.
That being said credit should be given to all those who do advertise and ensure we enjoy the quality, timely news service that Power FM and 2EC in addition to the entertainment they provide.
The Beagle is happy to support Power FM and 2EC in their latest campaign:
