Workers are set to return to the Batemans Bay Bridge replacement project from next week after work was postponed due to the ongoing bushfires.
Transport for NSW Regional Director Southern, Sam Knight, said work will resume on the construction site at Batemans Bay from Monday 13 January only if it is deemed safe to do so.
“Along with ensuring the safety of the community, Transport for NSW is focused on getting important road networks back up and running,” Ms Knight said.
“We understand the importance of this project and are working with the principal contractor to ensure that all of our staff and contractors are safe as work resumes in the area.”
Ms Knight said Transport for NSW and its contractors have been working closely with emergency services at the Batemans Bay Bridge replacement site office, where the Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Service have set up their operations.
“We continue to share our resources with emergency services, including power generators that have been made available to police and emergency services to carry out work during power outages,” Ms Knight said.
“Transport for NSW has also made the decision in conjunction with emergency services, maritime and stakeholders to cease the opening of the existing bridge lift span to operators of tall boats until further notice.
“The closure is required to ensure unrestricted movement across the bridge for supplies and emergency vehicles responding to nearby bushfires.”
Line marking and work to relocate concrete barriers on the Kings Highway near Old Punt Road and Bayridge Drive will also start from next week but will not go ahead if emergency vehicles require access to the Kings Highway.
Road users are still advised to avoid any non-essential travel as major roads in the region may need to be closed with little notice due to fires, including the Princes Highway and Snowy Mountains Highway, while the Kings Highway remains closed between Braidwood and North Batemans Bay.
